The 2026 winners of the William Taylor Scholarship in Radiocommunications are Aashi Chaubey and Ethan Coyle. Congratulations to both of them.
• University of Waterloo
• Entering 3rd year
• Held a co-op position at Motorola Solutions testing P25 radio systems
• My goal is to become an engineer at the intersection of RF communications and intelligent systems. Motorola showed me that public safety radio infrastructure is both technically demanding and genuinely consequential. Near-term, I want to deepen my expertise in RF systems and wireless protocols through research-focused co-op terms. Medium-term, I’m considering graduate studies in applied RF sensing or communications. Long-term, I want to contribute to making critical communications infrastructure more robust through software-defined radio, adaptive spectrum management, or AI-assisted signal monitoring. The Motorola experience gave me a strong foundation, and this scholarship would help me build on it deliberately.
• Entering 4th year
• Held a research assistant position at the University of New Brunswick’s Electronics in Remote and Adverse Surroundings lab, developing a simulation framework to streamline space systems design and experimentation on the European Space Agency’s OPS-SAT PRETTY satellite.
• After completing my undergraduate degree, I plan on pursuing a Master’s and then a PhD in a field related to RF engineering and communication systems, particularly involving applications which benefit from the use of Field-Programmable-Gate Arrays (FPGAs) which allow for high-bandwidth solutions to many communications problem we face. This field of electronics interests me the most since it combines both high-speed analog and digital design techniques where mathematical models are essential for designing functional and reliable systems. Currently, a driving factor for my interest in this field has been through the design and implementation of a FPGA based Ethernet MAC.
